Iranian parliamentarians are drafting a bill that could pave the way for the country to withdraw from the landmark Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a move that could escalate tensions with the international community.
Iran has been a signatory of the NPT since 1970. The treaty grants member nations the right to develop civilian nuclear energy but requires them to renounce nuclear weapons and cooperate with the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
If passed, the proposed bill could mark a significant shift in Iran’s nuclear policy. The draft legislation comes amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Western powers over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
